Imaan Somji, B.A., J.D., is an articling student with Beresh Law and expects to be called to the bar in 2027.

Born and raised in Edmonton, Imaan has always been committed to serving the community she calls home.

Before attending law school, Imaan earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology (with Distinction) through the University of Alberta’s Criminology Placement Program. During this time, she completed placements with a probation office and criminal defence law firm, both of which confirmed her desire to pursue a career in criminal law.

Imaan went on to earn her Juris Doctor (with Distinction) from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law, where she focused her studies on criminal law and remained dedicated to advocating for individuals whose voices are marginalized in the justice system.

Throughout law school, Imaan was actively involved with Student Legal Services (SLS), an organization that assists low-income individuals facing criminal and regulatory charges. She also participated in the Faculty’s competitive moot program, competing in the national Immigration, Refugee, Citizenship (IRC) Law Moot, where her team placed third overall.

During her first summer of law school, Imaan worked at the Federal Department of Justice. In her second summer, she became a full-time Criminal Project Dayleader at SLS, representing clients in their criminal and traffic matters. In this role, Imaan gained hands-on experience preparing Charter Notices, negotiating resolution offers, and running sentencing hearings, as well as low-complexity trials.

As an articling student at Beresh Law, Imaan is passionate about protecting her clients’ rights and helping them navigate the criminal justice system with confidence and respect.
