Meghan MacAskill, B.A. (Hons), J.D., is thrilled to be completing her articles under Brian Beresh K.C. at Beresh Law.

Meghan was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia and attended Mount Allison University in New Brunswick for her undergraduate degree.  She received her Bachelor of Arts in 2020 in Political Science (with First Class Honours with Distinction) and a History minor.  Her supervised independent study project on the destruction of Africville and racism in Nova Scotia motivated her to embark on a career in pursuit of justice.

Meghan graduated from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Common Law in 2023.  She had the opportunity to take a diversity of courses and gain practical legal experience through internships in various types of law.

Meghan assisted clients appeal the rejection of their application for disability benefits in her work with Community Legal Services of Ottawa. In her work with Tenant Duty Counsel Ottawa, she assisted in providing free legal advice to tenants prior to their Landlord Tenant Board hearing. Meghan’s work at a criminal defense and mental health law firm in Ottawa solidified her keen interest in criminal law, along with courses she took, such as Criminal Trial Advocacy, the Law of Evidence and Trial of a Murder.

During her time at law school, Meghan also enjoyed working as a Research Assistant on Indigenous legal pedagogy, and volunteering with Pro Bono Students Canada, LEAF Ottawa, and the Ottawa Law Review.  She received the top grade in her Child Protection Law course and the top paper in her Human Rights Law in Canada course for her paper analyzing Ontario’s discriminatory practices of segregation in its prisons.

Meghan’s experiences and studies have made her a strong advocate who is passionate about access to justice and helping others navigate the criminal justice system.
